In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Design Studio, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Rice University (RICE) collaborated to produce and distribute face shields to government offices, hospitals, schools, and churches in Malawi.

This initiative was born out of a shared desire to support the country's fight against COVID-19. Recognizing the critical need for personal protective equipment (PPE), Design Studio leveraged its expertise in product design and manufacturing to develop a cost-effective and reusable face shield. With the support of UNDP and RICE, the studio was able to scale up production and distribute the face shields to key institutions across Malawi.

Over 1000 face shields were distributed to government offices, hospitals, schools, and churches in Malawi. The shields were also provided to community health workers and other frontline workers who were at high risk of exposure to COVID-19. The face shields were warmly welcomed by recipients, who appreciated the added layer of protection they provided.
