Hackathon Challenge on Development of Sustainable Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs)- Call for Innovations

1. OVERVIEW

The National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST), in partnership with the University Innovation Pod (UniPod) at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), is organizing a Hackathon Challenge focused on innovations in local manufacturing of renewable energy technology (RET) components. This initiative aims to promote import substitution by encouraging the production of high-quality RET components within Malawi, reducing reliance on imports, and addressing the influx of sub-standard products in the market. Eligible applicants with innovative ideas are invited to participate in this challenge

 

2. THE PROBLEM

In spite of Government, development partners, and non-governmental organizations efforts to improve access to sustainable energy sources/RETs, the lack of such reliable RETs remains a significant constraint for attaining economic growth.

 

3. THEMATIC AREAS

The Hackathon Challenge will support projects in the fields of renewable energy with demonstrable innovativeness, contribution to import-substitution, value addition, scalability, and societal benefit. 4. FUNDING LEVELS AND BUDGET GUIDELINES

The maximum funding level for each successful proposal will be Forty Million Malawi Kwacha (MK40,000,000). 

 

5. DEADLINE FOR RECEIVING APPLICATIONS 

The deadline for submission is 11:59PM, 6th December 2024 Central Africa Time.
