The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) has showcased innovations that will go a long way in contributing towards the attainment of Malawi 2063. The displays are part of the 2023 National Development Conference being held at Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, from 2nd to 3rd February 2023.

The Malawi President, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera; the First Lady, Madam Monica Chakwera; Malawi’s Vice President, Saulos Chilima; government and National Planning Commission senior officials; and development partners took a tour of pavilions where the innovations were displayed.

President Chakwera was all smiles and congratulated MUBAS for the great innovative works. The president asked MUBAS Vice Chancellor, Associate Professor Nancy Chitera, and the innovations showcasing team to keep up with the good work.

MUBAS has displayed four innovations at the conference which is being held under the theme ‘Malawi 2063 One Year On: Forging Concerted Efforts, on the Journey to Wealth Creation and Self-Reliance.’

The first display is a Pyrolysis Equipment for converting plastic waste to diesel and petrol. This was developed by Moses Kamchedzera who has just completed his studies for a degree in Energy Engineering at MUBAS.

The second display is a Gemstone Detector presented by Jack Chinzu, a Mining Technician at MUBAS. The innovation detects the type of gemstone using absorption spectral. Chinzu explained that this innovation can be used by small scale miners to detect the type and name of a gemstone and to know its value.

Brian Nyirenda of MUBAS Design Studio has presented two innovations for the health sector: a Phototherapy Light that cures jaundice in children and Pumani, an oxygen concentrator for resuscitating babies with breathing difficulties.
