Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) students took time-off their busy academic life to cheer up and support patients at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre.

The students visited the referral hospital on Saturday, 13th July 2024 and donated assorted items to over 60 patients admitted in Ward 5A and cleaned up the Gogo Chatinkha Maternity Wing surroundings.

Speaking after the exercise, MUBAS Students Representative Council (SRC) President, Gershom Nyirenda said the benevolent exercise was organised to enhance community engagement which is a key component of the university’s mandate.

"As students, we believe that reaching out to the community is part of our corporate social responsibility and it is one way of showing our love and support to the community,’’ said Nyirenda.

He added that the MUBAS student body mobilized resources from the students to buy the items that were donated to the patients to uplift the welfare of the patients as well as offer them psychological support.

"also have our own daily needs but we feel we have a responsibility to assist those in need and we felt that the patients at the hospital need our support,’’ he added.

Frank Million, one of the guardians at the hospital expressed gratitude to the MUBAS students for the timely donation.

"There are so many challenges we face as guardians and as well as the patients, and the items we have received from the MUBAS students which included soap and sugar will ease such challenges,’’ he said.
